Hush

Hush finds the noisy tab and mutes the rest, with one shortcut or automatically as you switch tabs. Nothing leaves your browser.

The Problem

A tab starts playing a video and you spend a minute hunting for it. Or you want one tab's sound and nothing else, and muting tabs one by one gets old fast.

What Hush Does

  • Mute Others In One Keystroke

Press Alt+M and the tab you're on keeps playing while every other tab goes quiet. Press it again and they return.

  • Auto-Follow

Turn it on with Alt+A and the sound follows the tab you're on, after a grace delay you choose, so a switch never cuts a sentence in half.

  • See What Is Playing

A “Playing now” list and a “Played in the last 10 minutes” list, with jump-to-tab and a mute button for each tab. The icon badge counts tabs you can actually hear.

  • Restores Exactly

Hush only unmutes tabs it muted itself. A tab you muted by hand stays muted. “Put everything back” and “Pause Hush” undo it all in one click.

  • Pinned Tabs Stay On

Auto-follow never mutes a pinned tab, so your pinned music or call tab keeps playing.

  • Works Across Windows

Keep the active tab in every window audible, or only the window you're using. Your other windows stay muted.

How It Works

  1. Install And Pin It

Add Hush to Chrome and pin its icon so the badge is always visible.

  2. Pick A Mode

    Mute others (Alt+M), mute all (Alt+Shift+M) or auto-follow (Alt+A).

  3. Forget About It

Switch tabs as normal. Hush keeps the sound where you are.

Verify It Yourself

Hush asks for very little. Here is exactly what it can do, and how to check.

storage
Saves your settings on your device.
tabs (optional)
Requested only if you click “Show tab names”, so the list can show page titles. Without it the list shows generic labels and Hush reads no titles or addresses. You can turn it off again in Settings.
Network
None. Hush has no accounts, no sync and no analytics, and its code makes no network requests.

Open chrome://extensions and look at Hush's permissions and Details page, or open Hush's Settings to see whether tab names are on or off. Read the privacy policy.

Questions

Will Hush unmute tabs I muted myself?

No. Hush only ever unmutes tabs it muted itself, so anything you muted by hand stays muted.

Does it read my tab titles or browsing history?

Not by default. Titles are read only if you click “Show tab names” and approve the optional tabs permission, and they stay on your device. You can turn that off in Settings.

Can I change the shortcuts?

Yes. Alt+M, Alt+Shift+M and Alt+A are defaults, and you can rebind them at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Why do I see mute icons on tabs I'm not listening to?

The “Mute silent tabs too” setting mutes every background tab ahead of time so nothing can burst in. Turn it off and Hush only mutes tabs that are making sound, which leaves fewer mute icons.

Does the sound stop on the tab I just left?

After a short grace delay that you set in Settings, so you don't lose the end of a sentence when you switch.
