Text Cleanup Tool — Remove Extra Spaces, Emojis, HTML & More (Free, Online)

Clean up messy pasted text online for free. Strip HTML and Markdown, remove emojis and extra spaces, fix line breaks, change case, dedupe lines, and more — stacked into one pipeline, 100% in your browser.

What it does

Paste or drop in a .txt file, tick the cleanups you want, and watch the result update instantly on the right. You can stack as many cleanups as you like — collapse extra whitespace, strip HTML tags left over from a copy-paste, remove emojis, normalize smart quotes, change case, sort or number lines, and more — and they all run together in one pass. Nothing you paste is uploaded anywhere; the whole thing runs in your browser tab.

How it works

Each cleanup is its own toggle, and toggles apply in a fixed, sensible order — normalization and character removal happen before whitespace collapsing, which happens before case, sorting, and reordering — so stacking several cleanups together always gives a predictable result instead of a fragile order-dependent mess. A live changelog under the output tells you exactly what each toggle actually did (“removed 12 extra spaces, 3 emoji characters, 2 duplicate lines”), so you’re never guessing what changed. For anything the built-in toggles don’t cover, a custom regex find-and-replace pass is available at the bottom, with a built-in backtracking-risk check so a pathological pattern can’t hang your browser.

Your in-progress document is saved to this browser automatically (not uploaded — just kept locally) so a refresh or an accidental tab close won’t lose your work; there’s a one-click control to clear that saved copy whenever you want.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text into the left box, or drop a .txt file on the upload area.
  2. Turn on the cleanups you need — start with the Whitespace and Normalize sections for a general-purpose pass.
  3. Watch the right-hand box and the stats line update live as you toggle options.
  4. Optionally save your combination of toggles as a named “recipe” so you can reapply the exact same cleanup next time in one click.
  5. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send it straight to another tool with “Send to.”
  6. For several files at once, use the Batch files section at the bottom — drop multiple .txt files, and download them all cleaned in one .zip.

FAQ

Does this upload my text anywhere? No. Everything — reading, transforming, and saving your draft — happens locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Will it break my line breaks or paragraphs? Only if you turn on a line-break option. By default, line breaks are just normalized (Windows \r\n becomes a plain \n); “join wrapped paragraphs” and “wrap at width” are opt-in for when you specifically want to reflow text.

What’s the difference between removing non-ASCII characters and stripping accent marks? Stripping accent marks turns “café” into “cafe” but keeps the letters. Removing all non-ASCII characters is more aggressive — it deletes emoji, accented letters, and any other character outside the basic English alphabet, punctuation, and digits.

Can I remove duplicate lines without changing their order? Yes — the “Remove duplicate lines” toggle keeps the first occurrence of each line and removes later repeats, without touching order or line contents. Use the separate Sort toggle if you also want alphabetical order.

Is the custom regex option safe to use on text from an untrusted source? The regex tool flags patterns with a known catastrophic-backtracking shape (nested unbounded quantifiers, for example) before it runs them, and warns you. It’s a heuristic, not a guarantee, so keep an eye on very long or unusual input if you’re using a pattern you didn’t write yourself.

Can it strip Markdown formatting without touching the code blocks? Fenced code blocks (using triple backticks) have their formatting delimiters removed but their contents preserved as plain text, so code you want to keep readable isn’t mangled along with the rest of the Markdown syntax.

If your text came out of a spreadsheet or CSV export, run it through the CSV cleaner first to fix stray encoding before pasting it here; once you have a cleaned result, send it straight into the word counter or slug generator with the “Send to” button, no copy-paste required.
