Free Group Expense Splitter — Bills, Receipts & Settlement Planner
Split group expenses privately with equal, exact, percentage, share, and itemized methods, receipt attachments, balances, debt simplification, settlements, and optional live exchange rates.
What it does
Group Expense Splitter handles everything from a quick dinner split to a multi-day group trip. It supports equal, exact, percentage, share-based, and itemized expenses, multiple participants, running balances, settlement history, debt simplification, receipt attachments, recurring-style shared expenses, exports, and manual multi-currency rates.
For a fast bill-and-tip calculation, the Bill & Tip Splitter is a good lightweight companion.
How it works
Create a group and add participants. For each expense, choose the payer and split method. Equal splitting divides the total evenly; exact, percentage, and share methods let you control individual portions; itemized mode lets you assign receipt line items to one or more people.
The ledger tracks what each person paid and consumed. Positive balances represent money owed back to that person, while negative balances represent what they owe. The settlement simplifier converts those balances into a smaller set of transfers.
For travel or international groups, expenses can use different currencies. Manual exchange rates work offline. Live exchange rates are an explicit optional internet feature.

FAQ
Can I split a bill unevenly?
Yes. Use exact amounts, percentages, shares, or itemized splitting.
Can one item be shared by several people?
Yes. Itemized expenses allow a line item to be assigned to multiple participants, with its value divided among them.
Can I track who paid and who owes?
Yes. Each expense records the payer and each participant’s share, producing a running group balance.
Can the tool simplify debts?
Yes. The settlement planner nets the current balances and generates transfers between debtors and creditors to reduce unnecessary payments.
Does it support multiple currencies?
Yes. You can use different currencies and enter manual exchange rates. Live exchange rates are optional and disabled by default.
Are receipts uploaded anywhere?
No. Receipt files are persisted locally in the browser. The tool does not send receipt images to an OCR service by default.
Privacy
The group, expenses, balances, settlements, and receipt files are stored locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server during normal use. The only network feature is optional live exchange-rate fetching, which requires an explicit checkbox/confirmation and sends no expense or receipt data.
Supported formats
Receipt attachments can be images or PDFs supported by the browser. CSV exports contain expense and split data. JSON backup contains the group, participants, expenses, settlements, and exchange-rate settings.
Limitations
Live exchange rates depend on the external rate service being reachable and are not required for the tool to work. Manual rates are available offline. Settlement simplification assumes the entered balances are accurate and does not account for real-world cash, transfer fees, or currency conversion fees unless you include them in the expenses.
