PDF Metadata Editor & Remover — Edit or Clear Title, Author & More Free

View, edit, or clear a PDF’s Title, Author, Subject, and other document properties for free, right in your browser. Detects hidden XMP metadata too — no upload, no account.

What it does

This tool reads and lets you edit a PDF’s document properties — Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer — and its Creation/Modification dates. Edit any field and download an updated copy, or use “Clear all fields” to blank out everything identifying in one click before you send a file somewhere. Add several PDFs at once and each gets its own editable card and its own download.

How it works

PDFs carry their document properties in a small “Info dictionary” — the same fields a file browser or PDF reader shows you under Properties. This tool reads that dictionary directly and lets you change it. Many PDFs also carry a second, separate block called XMP metadata, which can duplicate or extend the same information in a different format; this tool checks for one on every file you add and flags it if found, since an Info-dictionary edit alone wouldn’t remove it. “Clear all fields” clears the Info dictionary and, when a file has one, also attempts to remove the XMP block.

One honest limitation: the underlying library this runs on can replace a Creation or Modification date but has no way to fully delete one — so a date field left empty is treated as “don’t touch this date,” not “blank it.” Every other field can be cleared outright.

If what you actually need is to hide or black out visible content on the page — not just the behind-the-scenes properties — that’s a different job, handled by pdf-redact. And if your sensitive metadata is sitting in photos rather than PDFs, bare does the same kind of cleanup for image EXIF/GPS data.

How to use it

  1. Drag in one or more PDFs.
  2. Each file shows its current Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, and dates, all editable directly.
  3. Change whatever you need, or click Clear all fields to blank everything at once.
  4. Click Apply & download on that file to get your updated copy. Reset to original undoes your edits for that file without needing to re-upload it.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded — reading and editing happens entirely in your browser. Unlike some other tools here, files you add are not auto-saved for next time; since the whole point of this tool is often removing identifying information, keeping a copy of that information around locally would work against you. Add your file, make your changes, download, and it’s gone once you close or refresh the page.

FAQ

Does “Clear all fields” remove everything identifying from my PDF?

It clears every field in the standard Info dictionary (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer) and attempts to remove any XMP metadata block found. It does not touch Creation/Modification dates (see the limitation above) or anything embedded inside images within the PDF — for that, look at bare on the source images before they’re placed into the PDF.

What’s the difference between the Info dictionary and XMP metadata?

They’re two separate places a PDF can store the same kind of information — the Info dictionary is the older, simpler format most PDF readers show you directly; XMP is a newer, more flexible format some PDF generators (especially Adobe tools) add on top. A file can have one, both, or neither. This tool checks each file you add and tells you if an XMP block was found.

Can I edit the Creation or Modification date?

Yes — type a new date and it’ll be set. Leaving that field’s box empty leaves the original date untouched, since it can be replaced but not fully removed.

Will this work on a password-protected PDF?

No — those are detected and skipped with a clear note rather than failing silently. Remove the password elsewhere first, then edit its metadata here.

Can I edit several PDFs at once?

Yes — add as many as you like; each gets its own set of fields and its own independent download, so you’re not forced to apply the same edit to all of them.

Will my files still be here if I refresh the page?

No, and that’s deliberate for this particular tool — see the Privacy section above. If you want a tool that does remember your files across a refresh, most of the other PDF tools here (like pdf-merge) do.
